Reducing emissions using renewable sources for electricity generation in Stewart Island

The electricity is generated in a traditional way extensively using diesel off-grid areas. However, it increases the consumption of fossil fuels and carbon emissions therefore essential to find alternative solutions help reaching sustainability goals. case study Stewart Island, where provided by distribution network powered up five generators at central power station. Local residents believe that reducing having renewable source generation are two island’s highest priorities. HOMER PRO software used compare current system with hybrid merging tidal energy (predictable) wind (unpredictable) (back-up), through microgrid. Using four turbines, plus one generator for back-up, produces fraction (61.1%) reduces fuel green gases (GHGs) 199,176 l 534,061 kg/yr, respectively, comparison Its levelized cost 21 c/kWh also more cost-effective rather than 23 present scenario.
